Preliminary Notes for Devotees and ex-Devotees of Sathya Sai Baba

Brian Steel August 2002

If you read these chapters and notes, you may feel irritated, upset, or angry with the contents. As an ex-devotee, and as the author of two very positive books about SSB, I can understand such initial reactions.

However, after carrying out extensive research over the last three years, and after also taking into account:

a) the revelations of recent books like Love is My Form, Vol. 1 (researched and written by a team of devotees) and one or two other publications;

b) the recent corroboration of the "packaging" of SSB's Telugu Discourses (in Sathya Sai Speaks) by the literal translations of ;

c) more than two years of multiple Internet revelations about SSB and his Organisation, and allegations about his sexual activities;

I now believe that SSB is not the unique avatar he has claimed to be, but that he is simply a gifted guru - one of many.

His exclusive claims:

1) to divinity (avatarhood);

2) to be the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba;

3) to Omnipotence, Omniscience, and Omnipresence (which he rarely claims directly these days in his Discourses);

are not justified by the evidence now available to us.

IF you still feel able to read on, I welcome you to my pages, which have NOT been lightly composed, and which were first researched for myself.

If you wish not to continue reading the contents of this part of my website, I understand that.

In either case, I would like to share something which I believe MUST be true:

Whatever spiritual and psychic energy you have invested in your guru (SSB) as "God" cannot have been wasted, even if you eventually decide that he is not what he claims. The deep and pure faith at the base of your thoughts, irrespective of their original inspiration, must have reached their real target: GOD.

Note for fellow ex-devotees of SSB:

Some of you may judge my evidence and conclusions about SSB to be far too mild and objective, and therefore irrelevant to your present frame of mind. As you are aware, there is a very extensive smorgasbord of spicier fare, which caters for all tastes, on the Internet.
